Track of The Month – February 2024
Kyalami (1976), South Africa
For February, we’re heading back to a Race Centre classic with Kyalami (1976) as our Hotlapping Track of the Month!
Located just north of Johannesburg, in the Gauteng province of South Africa, Kyalami has been hosting races for over 60 years and held the South African Grand Prix over twenty times.
At 2.550 miles (4.104 km) in length, the circuit features a total of 9 turns, each demanding precision and skill from drivers. Notable sections include the fast right-hand sweepers of Barbeque (Turn 2) and Sunset (Turn 4) where high speed and aerodynamics play a crucial role. The track also features the iconic Esses at Turns 6 and 7 which provides a challenging downhill then uphill chicane.
Kyalami gained international recognition when it hosted its first Formula 1 Grand Prix in 1967. It then proceeded to host the race every year until 1985, and then again in 1992 and 1993. During this era, the circuit saw many memorable moments such as Jody Scheckter’s historic home victory in 1975 and the legendary battle between James Hunt and Niki Lauda in 1976 in which Lauda beat Hunt to the finish line by only 1.3 seconds
Overall, the traditional layout of the Kyalami Circuit seamlessly combined speed, technical challenges, and strategic components, solidifying its well-deserved position in the prestigious realm of motorsport history.
